About the Role
The Athletic is looking for a passionate, analytical individual with an eye for great content to join our team as a Social Media Associate. In this role, you’ll be responsible for curation, packaging and distribution of original content across various channels (in-product, push, email) to drive growth and engagement. The Social Media Associate will be an expert on content produced by our staff of 400+ national and local journalists, have strong familiarity with various audience segments, and be expected to assist on high-level content strategy. This role will be based in our Los Angeles office or in a remote capacity throughout the United States or Canada.
All media roles require some level of modified schedule outside of M-F, 9-5. This role will likely include night and weekend hours. These are critical hours for the company as well as an opportunity to anchor our in-game coverage.
Responsibilities
- Execute content programming and distribution strategy, including curation and distribution of articles, podcasts, and short-form content to relevant audiences on an ongoing basis.
- Drive growth and engagement by leveraging content across push, email and in-product messaging channels.
- Support in creating documentation for company, platform and sport-wide curation strategy.
- Assist in planning and strategizing multi-channel campaigns around priority content and key events.
- Utilize data to inform decisions on how to package content in-product, and how to reach existing and future audiences through our content
- Communicate with editorial team to proactively identify high-performing content, plan packaging strategy across channels, and provide meaningful feedback on content performance.
- Develop copy and visual assets to create content packages that set The Athletic’s voice and tone across all channels.
- Collaborate across ops groups to align voice across platforms.
- Curate and create engaging social content for Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
- Provide real time coverage of live events on The Athletic’s social channels, app and home page.
Requirements
- 1 – 3 years experience in journalism/media, content packaging, digital marketing, social media or similar.
- Strong familiarity with The Athletic’s app, writers and the broad strokes of our product .
- Experience with content distribution in-product, or via push, social media or email.
- Data-driven and analytical; ability to think critically around metrics.
- Extensive knowledge of major professional / collegiate sports (NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLB, NHL, NWHL, Major global Soccer leagues, + CFB / CBB, Olympics).
- Collaborative by nature, comfortable communicating across multiple departments, timezones, sports, and collaborators.
- This role is expected to have flexible evening and weekend working hours to accommodate sports calendar of events.
- The following are not requirements but would put your candidacy higher in consideration:
- Experience with marketing CRM, front-end CMS or similar tool(s) at product-focused organization.
- Experience working directly with editorial at a news organization of any kind.
- Experience working in social media, content packaging or digital content management in the non-sports entertainment industry.
- Extensive interests / hobbies outside of sports — we love employees that live and think outside the box.
- Experience in a start-up environment.
