ABOUT THE ROLE:

Our Project Planner, specializing in Brownfield and Community Revitalization, will play a crucial role in redeveloping contaminated properties and reviving communities, protecting the environment, improving quality of life, and promoting sustainable development.

Working out of the Northern Appalachia Region, you will support and work with Montrose teams nationally to enhance our mission to help protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil that feeds us.  Your expertise will be essential in navigating regulatory requirements, evaluating and incorporating the results of environmental assessments, and collaborating with stakeholders to achieve successful brownfield redevelopment projects.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Our Project Planner role is a remote position, with the candidate expected to reside and work primarily in the Northern Appalachia region (western PA, WV, or eastern OH). The Project Planner will have a diverse and vast array of opportunities to assist with redevelopment and planning projects across the nation as well as internationally. While some overnight travel will be required, the majority of the work can be done virtually or with day trips.

As a you will be part of a strong team of committed professionals. This role will be responsible for a full range of activities, including:

Brownfields Prioritization and Integral Assessment

  • Review community needs, resources, and potential redevelopment sites with the overall goal of a unified, cohesive redevelopment plan.
  • Compile environmental site assessments (Phase I, Phase II), community input, and engineering information and use to evaluate developmental risks, impacts on the community, and redevelopment objectives.
  • Collaborate and create remedial solutions for contamination found at Brownfields.

Ensure Regulatory Compliance

  • Navigate federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to redevelopment, including environmental laws, zoning ordinances, and land use regulations.
  • Work closely with state and federal agencies to align redevelopment with voluntary or mandated cleanup and redevelopment objectives.
  • Evaluate and advise redevelopment options based on zoning and ordinance restrictions; assist communities with making amendments to local rules and regulations as needed for productive redevelopment (i.e., updating zoning).
  • Assist with regulatory compliance documentation, permit applications, and remediation plans to ensure adherence to environmental standards.

Remediation Planning and Implementation

  • Collaborate with engineers, environmental consultants, and contractors to design and execute effective, efficient remedial solutions.
  • Create comprehensive plans and master plans that incorporate all the elements of the assessments and planning conducted; identify a path moving forward that the community can follow and update.

Grant Writing and Management

  • Assist potential grantees with the selection of grants that suit their needs.
  • Work with the internal Montrose Grant Team to compile grant applications.
  • Assist grantees with evaluating past grant applications to identify deficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage grants for grantees with assistance from our experienced team.

Stakeholder Engagement and Communication

  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among stakeholders, including property owners, developers, government agencies, community groups, and the public. This can include hosting in-person and virtual meetings, neighborhood workshops, site tours, community surveys, and focus groups.
  • Present technical information and project updates to diverse audiences, ensuring transparency and promoting community involvement in decision-making processes.

Business Development

  • Identify and pursue potential clients for various funding practices, including brownfield redevelopment, community planning and development, blighted buildings, and building reuse.
  • Attend an anticipated 2-5 conferences annually.
  • Present to both internal staff and potential clients regarding available planning/development resources and opportunities.

Project Management

  • Manage brownfield redevelopment projects from inception through completion, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
  • Monitor project progress, assess risks, and implement corrective actions to achieve project milestones and objectives. This includes: Maintaining project schedules and adjusting based on community, regulatory, or grant timelines, tracking internal budgets, grant allocations, and percent complete for multiple projects, and supervising and coordinating staff across multiple nationwide offices and disciplines, when necessary. Leading and facilitating project discussions internally and among clients.

Other

  • Keeping up-to-date and current on industry trends by completing formal training, reviewing professional publications, and attending professional workshops.
  • Practicing safe work practices by following all Company safety rules and OSHA regulations, including attendance at all required safety training programs.
  • Participating in continuous improvement programs and providing support to team efforts.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

YOUR EXPERTISE AND SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, individuals must be able to perform each duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Science, Design, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years experience in Brownfields, community development, or related discipline.
  • Professional certification (e.g., AICP, PE, CHMM) preferred.
  • LEED GA/AP, SITES AP, ENV SP, and/or DBIA credentials are encouraged.
  • Proven experience in environmental planning, brownfield redevelopment, and related fields.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations, remediation technologies, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and/or StoryMaps.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience with Design-Build project delivery.
  • Experience with RFP/RFQ processes for public agencies, institutions, organizations, and private entities.
