What You’ll Do
- Lead and manage the underwriting team to meet service levels, underwriting goals, and OKRs
- Serve as a top-level point of contact for underwriting questions, complex risk evaluations, and escalations
- Coordinate workload and “load balancing” across underwriting teams to consistently hit SLAs
- Oversee regular training, SOP updates, and ongoing education on appetite, pricing models, and industry trends
- Act as the primary operational representative to channel partners, supporting strong partner relationships
- Gather feedback from internal and external stakeholders to improve conversion, operations, and partner experience
- Collaborate across departments to design and implement new processes, products, and services for partner business
- Provide reporting, data insights, and benchmarking to leadership to guide underwriting strategy
- Develop and execute business strategies that keep the underwriting book aligned with company profitability and growth goals
- Mentor and grow team leads and underwriters through coaching, feedback, and clear development paths
- Partner with People and Talent teams on hiring, onboarding, performance management, and workforce planning
- Monitor and manage the underwriting book of business, partnering with Business Development to support retention and engagement
What You Need
- High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree or relevant college coursework preferred
- At least 6 years of commercial insurance experience, including 2 years leading a commercial underwriting team (or equivalent leadership experience)
- Strong knowledge of underwriting, rate making, book management, and departmental goal setting
- Intermediate to advanced communication skills with the ability to explain complex topics clearly across all levels of the organization
- Advanced problem solving skills and comfort managing complex, multi-layered situations proactively
- Proven ability to set productivity and performance goals, make hiring decisions, and manage headcount plans
- Experience using G Suite, collaboration tools (such as Slack), and other cloud-based systems
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, make decisions that improve productivity, and move deliverables with urgency
- Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of building partnerships and working cross-functionally
- Solid understanding of service metrics, customer experience operations, and how to apply data to improve efficiency, conversion, and cost
