Job Summary and Qualifications

This a part time contract positions 4-16 hours per week.

The Counselor is a member of the Student Success department and plays an important role as part of the Student Success team of Galen College of Nursing. The Counselor is responsible for providing general counseling, clinical mental health recommendations, and community mental health references to the student population. This includes providing clinical mental health counseling in the individual and group setting in line with departmental student academic development, implementation and evaluation of policies, procedures, and programs, as well as consulting with faculty, staff, and administration over mental health topics. In addition, the counselor will participate in developing proactive mental health and wellness programming to the entire student population. As appropriate the Counselor may review and makes recommendations related to requests for accommodations following the College’s policies and procedures and the Accommodations Council for establishing and maintaining accommodations and communicates outcome to the Section 504/Title IX Coordinator. 

Position Responsibilities General Guidance 

1. Provides individual and group mental health counseling services to the campus student population, including evaluation, development and facilitation of support groups and making referrals for internal academic services or to external clinicians, as needed. 

2. Provides confidential guidance for a wide variety of academic and social issues, such as test anxiety, learning struggles, and interpersonal conflict. 

3. Works with the Student Success Department to determine common topics for the development and delivery of mental health and wellness programming which can benefit the student population at large. 

4. Assists in the development, support, and supervision of interns, as applicable, including recommending individuals for short-term contracts. 5. Other applicable duties as assigned. 

Accommodations – as appropriate 

1. Meets with referred applicant or student to discuss request for accommodations. 

2. Ensures student documentation for a requested accommodation is complete as outlined in the Student Catalog. 

3. Reviews and makes determinations related to requests for accommodations following the College’s policies and procedures for establishing and maintaining accommodations and communicates outcome to the Section 504/Title IX Coordinator. 

4. Confers with Accommodations Council on the appropriateness of academic adjustments prior to implementation of recommendations, as required. 

5. Cooperates with Compliance and Regulatory Affairs and Section 504/Title IX Coordinator to safeguard ADA compliance. 

Position Requirements 

Unencumbered Licensure: Licensed psychotherapist or counselor that allows for independent practice. 

Education: Minimum of a master’s degree in Psychology and Counseling; doctorate degree preferred. 

Experience: Demonstrated experience using tact and sensitivity in dealing with confidential matters. 

Special Qualifications: Highly motivated self-starter who can take initiative and balance preventative and intervention practice. Strong interest in developing student nurses as empowered learners and leaders. Learner-focused professional with a deep understanding of and passion for student life and associated best practices in the context of higher education. Working knowledge of Family Educational and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations. Ability to follow College policies and procedures. Must be committed to a culture of diversity, respect, and inclusion. General knowledge of the College’s mission and values for the purpose of supporting student success and institutional outcomes.
