Job Summary
The Customer Service Specialist plays a key role in managing both hospital and physician accounts within the revenue cycle. This role handles a high volume of inbound calls assisting patients with billing questions, insurance issues, MyChart support, and payment options. It also involves outbound calls for self-pay follow-up, data analysis, denial resolution, and preparing accounts for appeals.
Responsibilities
- Answer inbound calls from patients regarding billing, payments, and insurance inquiries.
- Provide clear, professional, and empathetic communication to resolve patient concerns.
- Educate patients on billing processes, claim status, deductibles, co-pays, coinsurance, and financial assistance options.
- Set up payment plans in MyChart tailored to patient needs.
- Make outbound calls related to self-pay follow-up and account inquiries.
- Review accounts for insurance coverage; correct missing or inaccurate information.
- Research and analyze denials, non-payments, overpayments, credit balances, and unapplied funds.
- Contact payers for claim status and escalate problem accounts as needed.
- Document all account activity per departmental guidelines, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and payer regulations.
- Participate in ongoing training and special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- 2+ years of experience in billing, bookkeeping, or accounting (required)
- Knowledge of revenue cycle processes (A/R, cash posting, claims, correspondence, denials/appeals, etc.)
- Familiarity with Epic or similar billing systems strongly preferred
- Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills
- Ability to analyze data and problem-solve effectively

- Remote role, reporting to Prisma Health’s System Billing Office
