Job Summary:

This position will be responsible for the investigation and resolution of lower to moderate complexity and lower to moderate exposure claims. Under general supervision this position will be able to manage full claims workload without assistance and be responsible for making sound decisions within delegated authority. Adheres to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal Claims Quality Performance Objectives. Minimal travel required.

  • Confirm coverage of claims by reviewing policies and document submitted in support of claims
  • Analyze coverage and communicate coverage positions
  • Ability to draft coverage position letters and identify suspicious losses
  • Conduct, coordinate, and direct investigation into loss facts and extent of damages
  • Evaluate information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured’s exposure
  • Set reserves within authority or makes recommendations concerning reserve changes to manager
  • Negotiate and settle claims within authority
  • Prepare reports by collecting and summarizing information
  • Participate in special projects or assists other team members as requested
  • Represent Markel in out of town mediations, settlement conferences, industry conferences or meetings
  • Provide excellent and professional customer service to insureds while maintaining a high level of production

Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Advanced degree, or focused technical degree a plus
  • Must have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license
  • Minimum of five years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of insurance industry or claims handling preferred
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to present claims in roundtable meetings with claims and underwriting
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Word)
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong desire for continuous improvement
